Your Cheat Sheet To Staying In Shape This Wedding Season

Three scandalously-fit DSSC homies share their ace tips with us for breezing through the wedding season without gaining a centimetre.

With everyone & their neighbour getting married, we don’t see how we’re going to get back on an eating green regimen anytime soon. A lot of sweets and festive foods are loaded with sugar, oil and ghee which we eat at odd hours. In addition to this, the late nights and guzzling spirits don’t make it easier on our bodies.

Enter Ishaan Sethi, Sumalini Khullar & Shagun Jain. These health aficionados are in super shape & high on the fun quotient too. They make life simple for us as they hand out valuable tips not just for eating clean but staying fit too. Their easy-to-follow suggestions promise to keep us on top of our health game this year. Heck, looking at them, we aim to follow their lead into the New Year. Enough talking, let’s start doing. So without further ado, here’s how we plan to get through the year without stuffing ourselves silly.

Eating Like A Boss

Delhi dynamite Ishaan Sethi has quite a few party-ploys up his sleeve. The CEO/Co-founder of PropheSee has a medicine ball for a seat at work & which makes it easy to “break into sporadic crunches” as he puts it. Let’s see what his tips for a health-friendly wedding period are.

Ishaan Sethi

  1. Mind your sweeties & toss the salt. The days you’re attending evening events, make a conscious effort to cut down your sugar and salt intake during the day as the evening food may be excessively salty or excessively sweet. Stick to natural sugar & avoid preserved meats and salted nuts. Eating dinner before the event is also a simple way to fill up. This way you can toast the bride & groom on a full tummy and munch on snacks as the evening progresses & steer clear of the heavy mains .
  1. If you can manage to steer clear of the spirit section, kudos to you & more for us! But if you’re somebody who doesn’t want to be a totes sober ninja (Ishaan’s words, and we couldn’t agree more!) stick to clear drinks with lower calories per ounce like gin or tequila.
  1. For those of us considering detox diets after the wedding season, Ishaan reminds us that unless we make living fit & eating clean a part of everyday life, we’d just put the weight we lose, back on in due time. He believes it’s all about eating right rather than curbing our appetites. He suggests substituting day food with better options like rice with quinoa & ice cream for frozen fruit.

Secret Wedding Cheat: Keep it simple like Ishaan does by skipping the food line altogether & instead heading to the chaat stall early in the evening.

The Day-After Detox Dos

Sumalini Khullar, one-half of Baroque is one of the best wedding guests to have & is known to up the ante at each one she heads to! While she tries to be a model eater, she does give in to the occasional bout of butter chicken & dal makhni. We tune into what this trendsetting diva has to say about feeling better the day after a night of indulgence.

  1. For every night that Sumalini eats out, she tries to make up for it by being on a healthy low-carb diet the next day. This is a cool technique we’re going to use, in case we fall off the wagon. We all know there’s going to be one function where the food is irresistible.
  1. Sumalini advocates a homemade detox juice with watermelon & like DSSC and is a fan of the Antidote juice detox as well, which she does twice a week to counter wedding boo-boos. The entire DSSC team recently tried the cleanse and not to exaggerate but we felt born again & the squeaky clean, battery-powered up feeling is yet to fade. Yes for this one!
  1. Follow Sumalini’s lead as she burns up the dance floor. She’s all for dancing like no one’s watching so counter the devilish cravings you gave into last night & groove the blues away. Jumpstart your metabolism with a zumba class & shake off that hangover. Who knows, you might learn a few new moves to go with that dancer’s bod!

Secret Wedding Cheat: Stick to tandoori snacks & no mains after sundown. If you must have a taste of the food, keep it small & make up for it the next day by watching your diet & incorporating in a bit of movement – quick pushups, abs or 2 minutes of plank.

Funky Fixes For The Fitness Freaks

A holla at the fitness enthusiast in the house, Shagun Jain. An unofficial fitness training activist, you can sum his philosophy up like as #YourBodyIsYourMachine. He claims to have not stepped into a gym for the past two years & has some very doable fitness fundas to fix your chubby woes without stepping out of your house. No fear if you’re a vegetarian coz’ so is he & if these fit tips work for him, they’ll work for you!

  1. DSSC homeboy Shagun already has a fitness-inspired lifestyle in check. He has stopped taking elevators completely & is all for small lifestyle changes. This wedding season he plans to amp up his training while expecting lavish spreads at events & we’re pretty sure he plans his workouts with more effort than we do our clothes! He loves his sweets though & adds that it’s okay to indulge, one of the main reasons we work out is so we can enjoy food.
  1. TRX & ViPR are two of Shagun’s fitness secrets. TRX is a fitness suspension system that can be used at home, in the park or even at work. It is a nifty little thing which can fit into an 8×8 inch bag. The TRX gives its user a whole body workout & Shagun gives it major points for allowing him to workout from home. ViPR is an exercise tool that’s all the rage at the moment. It is a long hollow tube with grooves which you move in a certain way so you get a full body weight & cardio workout. It is a method athletes use for training & if you do get in on this craze, you can thank us later.
  1. If you’re old school & prefer to keep it simple, check out HIIT exercises. High Intensity Interval Training is a fantastic way to keep the flab in check. Mix it up with Tabata, a technique created by a Japanese scientist that gives incredible results. Shagun suggests a combination of three to four exercises like a burpee/jump squat/mountain climbers or plank/skater lunges/bear walk/superman pushups. Or you can create your own workout and twenty minutes and twenty reps later, you’re done!

Secret Wedding Cheat: Hydrate with water during the evening functions & avoid white bread at all costs. No matter what you do, don’t reach a wedding hungry – snack on organic fruits & veggies in the day and be sure to include nuts as they support the liver which will be working overtime this wedding season.

So thanks to our DSSC homies we’re now feeling quite pumped & not that guilty anymore. Signing off, we’d like to say we solemnly swear we won’t deny ourselves any yummy chow. We know what to do before, after & during a wedding to keep our calorie count on the down-low and promise to put in twenty minutes of exercise everyday no matter the fashion emergency & hope that’s enough to carry us through till NYE.
